CHAPTER TEN

On the walk back to Therian Hall, my shoes got just as wet, and my face got just as chapped as they had the first time, but the warmth radiating from Laith’s hand made all of that feel like it was happening to someone else.

The only trouble was that we’d forgotten how to talk. Any time either of us would try, the only thing that came out was nervous laughter and a foggy white puff of breath. By the time we reached the winding path through the courtyard, I was starting to worry I’d kissed Laith so hard it had paralyzed our tongues.

Just outside the Great Hall’s rear entrance, he paused and tugged me toward him. His free hand came to rest on my waist, and I was filled with an intense hatred for the plush hoodie keeping his fingers so far away from my bare skin. He smiled shyly, biting one corner of his mouth.

“So…” That was all he managed to get out before he started laughing again.

The smile that spread across my face hurt. Like, it actually hurt. And that filled me with terror as much as it did joy. It seemed like only a matter of time now before I started kissing him on the tip of the nose. What if I started calling him babe? What if there was nothing I could do to keep that from happening? What if we started wearing matching clothes and telling anyone who would listen how great the other person was at in bed?

His smile wavered, and he squinted at my face.

Crap, what if he can read my mind now?!?! I didn’t mean oh, no! I meant, oh, wow!!! I mean, we’re definitely going further. At some point. I think. Unless he really is waiting until marriage. Are you waiting until marriage?

I stared at him with painfully wide eyes, trying to figure out if he was hearing all this or not. Because if he was, I was going to need to dive head first into the nearest snowbank and stay there until spring.

“Please don’t take this the wrong way, but…” He widened his eyes and stretched out his grin. “I can’t tell if this is the face of someone who’s happy with her decisions or deeply regretting them.”

“I think I’m having a happy panic attack? Is that a thing?” I laughed too loud. “I don’t know how to make it stop.”

The confidence returned to his grin. “Here. Maybe this will help.”

His hands gently cupped my face, thumbs caressing my cheeks. My smile shrank to normal human proportions, and my eyes threatened to flutter shut.

“Would it be okay if I kissed you again?” he asked, his voice a low purr.

I nodded, and a heartbeat later, his lips brushed mine. He still tasted like sweat and sawdust. The first two times we kissed—once on Mardone’s desk, and once in Embry’s classroom, so lookout Belhollow!—had been wild and frantic, dare I say animal. But this one
